BURRRRRRRR !!

It is CHILLY here -- and will be chilly tonight, tomorrow, and tomorrow night.

The good news is .... this is the BLACKBERRY WINTER ... which is traditionally the last cold snap of the season. It is a bit late this year (usually the last frost date in our area is Arpil 10th) but none-the-less we should be safe to plant our gardens and tender plants next weekend. And very soon we should see the Blackberry Brambles in bloom (photo above).

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
...COLDER THAN NORMAL TEMPERATURES WILL CONTINUE THROUGH TUESDAY...

AN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE WILL MOVE SOUTHEAST THROUGH THE APPALACHIANS INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK. COLD AIR WILL CONTINUE TO FILTER SOUTHWARD BEHIND AND UNDERNEATH THE TROUGH AFFECTING MUCH OF THE EASTERN UNITED STATES.

LIGHT RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS WILL PERSIST ACROSS SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA ... EAST TENNESSEE AND SOUTHWEST NORTH CAROLINA INTO MONDAY EVENING. THE PRECIPITATION WILL BE A WINTRY MIX AT TIMES. SUPER COOLED WATER WILL RESULT IN HEAVY FROSTING OF TREES AT ELEVATIONS AROUND 3000 FEET. SNOW ACCUMULATION IS POSSIBLE AT LEVELS ABOVE 3000 FEET INTO MONDAY AFTERNOON.

THE PRECIPITATION WILL TAPER OFF BY MONDAY EVENING. SKIES WILL BEGIN TO CLEAR AND WINDS WILL BECOME LIGHTER. THIS WILL ALLOW TEMPERATURES TO FALL TO NEAR FREEZING ACROSS MUCH OF THE AREA. THE NORMAL DATE FOR THE LAST FREEZE OF THE SEASON IS APRIL 10 FOR THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN VALLEYS OF EAST TENNESSEE. A FREEZE WARNING MAY BE REQUIRED IN THOSE AREAS FOR TUESDAY MORNING. FROST WILL LIKELY BE WIDESPREAD EARLY TUESDAY.

Oh see now, I like that particular kind of forecast. The "detailed" or "discussion" type. I haven't found a source for that type in our area yet. All we get is the "sunny - hi of 69°" and maybe "south wind 14 to 21 mph with gusts up to 31 mph" as today happens to be. Although I can't follow the true meteorologist's lingo, some have a give of giving details about it in layman's terms. Nice.
This should be the last of the cold weather, from what I understand. I've been reading the almanac in Countryside magazine and am fascinated how right on they've been about the weather systems. It'll be hot and muggy before ya know it! We're just waiting for it to dry out so we can put in our garden. Soon soon soon...
